Protect Matilda the Elephant

Matilda is an Asian elephant, which are smaller than their African relatives. She lost her mother before she was 2 years old and was found hiding amongst a herd of domestic water buffalo for company. She needed help because she was exhausted and hungry. Elephants experience emotions such as joy and sorrow and she certainly did not seem very well or happy. But with expert care she is gradually getting better and growing in confidence. One day she will go back to the wild where she belongs.

Born Free is an international charity dedicated to the protection of numerous rare species. As well as elephants, they save big cats and great apes which have been orphaned by poaching or the ivory trade, and care for them until they are able to look after themselves. They also rescue animals which are being kept in tiny cages, moving them to spacious sanctuaries where they will be given care for as long as they need it.

They can eat 200kg of food every day - the same as 444 tins of baked beans!

When an elephant is nervous or angry it will trumpet and shake its head to slap its ears on its body!
