Build homes for Frogs

Britain's ponds are home to many of its most interesting creatures. Amongst them, frogs are perhaps the most iconic, and are beloved characters in countless works of children’s literature.

Frogs, of course, live in ponds. As well as toads and newts, they need ponds to breed in - and can't use rivers or streams. But the number of ponds available in the UK has been plummeting for the last century – and the amount which are clean enough for frogs and other animals to live in has gone down even further. Frogs cannot live without these rich and safe habitats and they don’t want to live in dirty, polluted water.

Pond Conservation is working with the Million Ponds Project, an ambitious mission with simple aims – to dig thousands of new ponds in the country every year. Ponds are as important for biodiversity as rivers, lakes and forests, and with your help they will remain a common sight in the British countryside.

Making clean new ponds is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect freshwater wildlife. Your donation will help with research, surveys and practical conservation.

Did you know?

When frogs grow, they shed their skin - then eat it!

Most ponds were originally created by people. They were useful for drinking water for people or farm animals, to power mills and factories, for fishing, attracting ducks to be eaten, to grow watercress, to protect houses from attack, or simply to look nice.

Ponds have more types of animals and plants than rivers or lakes.

Frogs don’t drink - they absorb water through their skin.
