Children in Africa who need to learn how to swim
Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda is one of the deepest and most beautiful in Africa. For the people who live next to it, it should also be one of the safest because common dangerous animals such as hippos or crocodiles do not live in the water. But most Ugandans have never learnt to swim, so sadly many people drown in the lake every year.
The Lake’s edges are often steep, and it can be very deep close to the shore. It is dangerous to go near the lake if you cannot swim. But it is hard to find clean water in Uganda, and people must go to the lake to collect water to carry home. And because the lake is so huge, travelling around it takes far too long compared to going across on a boat.
As part of its work in the area, Edirisa is providing swimming lessons to local children and training people in rescue techniques and First Aid. Edirisa is also working on ways to provide the population with clean water, to try and prevent the diseases which make many people dangerously ill.
