Keep tribal traditions safe through education

The cultures of Eastern and Central Africa are rich and varied, yet numerous pressures are threatening their survival. Edirisa works with the children in Ugandan Bakiga communities, trying to encourage a love and knowledge of traditional dancing and songs.

Sadly much of the older generation in this part of Africa has been lost to HIV/AIDS. Many children are now being brought up by their older brothers and sisters. Partly because of this, much of the local history, folk stories, language, songs and traditional dances that would normally be taught to children by their parents or grandparents are being forgotten.

Edirisa’s nurseries try to make sure children know about and are proud of their heritage. Helping to reinforce the value of Ugandan society, it aims to ease the pressure on young people who feel they must copy European culture at the expense of their own. Traditional music and dance, trips to the local Bakiga and Pygmy museum, creative craft workshops, school trips and interaction with local elders are all organised with this aim.
