Convincing your child this is a Good Idea

Your son or daughter may already be keen on having a Party Around the World. They may even have approached you with the idea, in which case the battle is probably already over. Here are some tips, however, if the birthday boy or girl is not too keen on the idea...

1 - Personalise the mission.

Peter's frog sanctuary or Katie's classroom in Kenya. Portraying the process as their responsibility – and their victory – means pride and engagement. And they still get the 'specialness' of it being their birthday.

2 - Its not all bad!

You are still going to get them something, aren't you?

3 - A day out with wellies

For some of the choices which are based in the UK, you could actually go on a trip to see something like it in real life! Splashing around looking for frogs or visiting the seaside would really bring the effects of the money to life.

4 - Lead by example

Children learn from the actions of the adults they respect. If you tell them about your own charitable giving in the course of daily life – maybe let them drop the coin in the shaker – the idea won’t be new to them.

5 - Involve them in the decision

Ask them which they would like to support, explain how it works. If you don't present it like they have no choice it might stand more of a chance of actually happening.
